OPENING
Empowering Students and Teachers in Experiential Learning
Abstract
In this seminar, Dr. C.K. Chui will explore his journey of fostering experiential learning projects at HKU, emphasizing the enriching educational outcomes for students involved. He will elaborate on the integration of these outcomes as a core element of the teaching program, leading to increased support from students, educators, and the university to enhance its impact and effectiveness.
Transitioning from individual teaching excellence to empowering students and educators in experiential learning, Dr. C.K. Chui has taken on a Director role in designing, establishing, and managing the Tam Wing Fan Innovation Wing, also known as the HKU Inno Wing. This initiative aims to broaden student and educator participation in hands-on experiential learning in HKU. Since its inception in 2020, the Inno Wing has served as a central hub for nurturing Student-Initiated Interest Groups (SIGs) and Student-Initiated Courses (SICs) focused on technology exploration and advancement. These interdisciplinary, project-based initiatives, led by students, provide a rich environment for immersive hands-on experiential learning experiences at HKU.
The evaluation of the Inno Wing’s impact on student learning and development, conducted through student surveys and alumni interviews, reveals that engagement with SIGs and SICs significantly enhances students’ acquisition of essential competencies. These competencies include innovation, problem-solving skills, project management abilities, teamwork dynamics, and leadership qualities—crucial attributes for student growth. Nevertheless, survey results identify areas for improvement, particularly in facilitating networking opportunities and nurturing global perspectives. We propose practical strategies to address these identified areas for growth.
This seminar encapsulates insights focused on enhancing student experiential learning through innovative infrastructural initiatives, providing a framework for the strategic planning, execution, and management of similar projects in higher education institutions.
